Development of EPK – Trailer

Below are some examples of different advertisement trailers that are promoting a product or service. This collection of trailers is a mix of both real and fan-made advertisements, but all will help my to understand how I should create a trailer that best promotes my product of the mental health education resource animations.

Each of these trailers are very different in how they promote their service or product, but some of the consistencies between them include;

  • Minimal text on the screen at one time
  • Simple but effective transitions and animations
  • not too cluttered/or have too much going on at once

Looking into these trailers helped to inform me of the key features that make an effective trailer, which I will try to replicate within my own EPK trailer.

Development of the EPK trailer

Below are a collecting of screen grabs that illustrate the process of creating the trailer for the EPK. A lot of what I did to create the trailer consisted of using a lot of the assets that I had already created for my mental health animations and the creating transition between these as well as adding some text that informs the viewer that the topic of mental health is not a part of the national curriculum, and that my educations resources will help to provide information on this topic. I first stated by creating the whole trailer within After Effects before exporting the file out of there and importing it into Premier so that I could add the final touches to the trailer such as music.

EPK Trailer for Mental Health Animations

Overall I am very happy with how this trailer has come out. It informs viewers of what the problem is (the lack of education on mental health within schools when more and more people suffer from mental health problems) and the solution (my educational resources) as well as the intended audience for these animations (Key Stage two children). The trailer also conforms to the design style that I used within my animations, helping to keep consistency amongst all my work.

Planning the Electronic Press Kit (EPK)

As part of this project I need to create an EPK, and this should include;

  • A personal head shot
  • A contextual paragraph about my project that covers that aims, objectives, core themes, target audience/market/CPD focus
  • A thumbnail image that best encapsulates my project
  • An original audio/visual element that is made specifically for the EPK (no longer then 120 seconds)
  • The work created within both semesters

My Plan

Contextual paragraph about my project

For this project, I decided to create a series of animations that covered the topic of mental health and could be used as educational resources to teach key stage 2 children (7-11 year olds) about this subject. My aim was to create animations that were engaging and informative for my target audience to watch while also educating them on what mental health actually is. Mental health is something that everyone has and it is important to know how to look after, but stigma about the subject often means that many people neglect their own. With my educational videos, I hope to inform younger generations what mental health is so they have more of an understanding on how to look after their own and spot when others around them maybe struggling and offer support. My hope with directing these animations towards primary school age children is that my video will help act as a preventative. By informing children of good practises for their mental health, they will be able to begin applying these to everyday life and will be able to balance the struggles of day-to-day life without it tearing them down. The videos will also help to get more people taking about the subject of mental health so that is not longer becomes a scary term that people think should not be discussed. Currently, many people struggle to open up about their own mental health, so by teaching children about the subject early on and presenting it in a non threatening way, hopefully more people will begin to open up and seek help when they are struggling, rather than suffering alone.

Thumbnail

When it comes to the thumbnail image, I think that it would be best to use the logo that I created for the title sequences of my animations, or at least have it somewhere visible along with my character. These two images are the constant within my animation videos and are what I personally think represent this project the most.

Original audio/visual element

For my project, I think that it would make the most sense to create a trailer for my educational mental health animations. Some of the key themes and elements that this trailer would need to incorporate are;

  • Who the animations are for? (7-11 year olds)
  • What my animations are about? (Mental health)
  • The fact that these are education resources
